Default 2010 Week 21

TAKE ACTION MONDAY! Keep the calls and e-mails coming to save jobs! Ask colleagues, friends, and family to join the fight to save educator jobs:
• You can still call 1-866-608-6355 to contact your Representative in Congress. You will hear talking points and will be connected to the United States Capitol Switchboard – ask for your House Member. Tell your Representative that public education faces a budget catastrophe and that he/she should support including investments to save education jobs in the emergency funding bill (known as the “emergency supplemental” funding bill). Tell them it will save 3200 jobs in South Carolina.
• Continue to e-mail your Members of Congress to support funding to save education jobs in the emergency supplemental appropriations bill.
• Quality education leads to higher worker wages and increased worker productivity.
• Education reduces social aliments like crime, drug abuse and welfare dependency.

Legislative Update for the week of June 15-17, 2010
2010-11 Budget Vetoes
The legislature returned on June 15-17 to handle 107 budget vetoes from Governor Mark Sanford. The House of Representatives sustained (or agreed with) 51 of the vetoes, while overriding (didn’t agree with) 56 vetoes. The Senate has to complete its review of the 56 vetoes when both chambers return on June 29, including six education related-vetoes.

The education related vetoes that have been overridden by both the House and Senate are:

• Veto #1, Department of Education-High Schools that Work ($1,403,145)
• Veto #6, Department of Education-EEDA ($1,213,065)

All vetoes that are overridden by both the House of Representatives and the Senate will be included in the funding for the 2010-11 budget.
