Teachers Facing New Evaluation

On June 11, 2014, the State Board of Education approved a new educator evaluation system. The new model represents a shift in focus from student achievement to student growth. Teachers will use tools like value-added and student learning objectives to measure student growth.

The SCEA worked hard for its members, to reduce the original 50% proportion of the system tied to student growth to a more reasonable 30%.  Educators will need to focus during the 2014-2015 year on mastering the fundamentals of drafting and implementing SLOs to measure student growth in areas that are not subject to standardized tests.

Thanks to a grant from the NEA, The SCEA is now a natioanlly recognized to deliver a train-the-trainer model for creating rigerous, high quality SLOs and assessments. We will be working with the S.C. Department of Education and the S.C. Association of School Administrators to offer professional development in writing SLOs, and analyzing results in order to develop reliable and valid assessments in all subjects and grade levels.

The SCEA is prepared to bring its SLO training expertise, upon request, to local school districts. All you need to do is make the call and we will schedule a training that’s convenient for you. To inquire about professional development regarding SLOs, please contact Kathy Richardson, Director of the SC Children’s Foundation, at 803-230-7140 or
