WASHINGTON — Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was sworn in today as the first Black female justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. She was confirmed by the Senate in April and took the oath minutes after her mentor, Justice Stephen G. Breyer, retired from the court.

The following statement about today’s ruling can be attributed to NEA President Becky Pringle:

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson begins a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court today. Our country will better reflect its rich diversity with Justice Jackson on the court. It also has never been clearer why courts and elections matter. On behalf of the 3 million members of the National Education Association, I applaud President Biden for his historic appointment and making the judiciary reflect the best of America that is Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.”
